We're still here

I promise. I haven't abandoned All About Tahmoh Penikett. The news has been a bit slow and summer has been a bit busy so I've not posted in a while. I'm hoping to grab some screen caps from The Killing in the next couple weeks. Keep your fingers crossed - we may even have a few surprises to share. For now...

Netflix Subscribers can stream many of Tahmoh's earlier movies and television series, including the following (I'll update the list as I find more or they become available):

Just because I can, I'm reposting the flickr link to screen caps Justine took of Tahmoh as Elias Noth in Whistler, which is my all-time favorite Tahmoh role. I don't know any place you can still legally watch Whistler, so these pictures are all I can share until (if?) it becomes available.

Cold Squad "Voices over Water" (702) screencaps

I've uploaded a batch of screencaps of Tahmoh as Constable Ray Chase from the second episode of Cold Squad's seventh season to the site's Flickr. (See screencaps from the first episode here and previous posts on the series here).

Cold Squad, "Voices Over Water" (#88)
Season 7 - Episode 2
First Aired: September 11, 2004

Ray, ever the eager beat cop, angles to get in on the investigation and discovers some possibly relevant information. Ali indulges his enthusiasm and lets him do some leg work on the case. The research pays off--much to the annoyance of Harper. Meanwhile, Ray continues to flirt with Samantha, who seems interested... At the end of the episode, the team thanks Ray for his help and they all share a drink.

Here's the TV.com episode description:
When a camp counselor offers evidence that three children who died in a boating accident at camp thirty years ago were actually murdered, the Squad investigates the claims. Ali initially goes off what Goren Berkland is claiming even though there is only his word to go on, until she discovers that he lives in a mental institution and is only occasionally in touch with reality.

Cold Squad "No Life Like It" (701) screencaps

As requested (see poll at right), here are some screencaps from Tahmoh's first episode of the Canadian crime drama, Cold Squad (see previous posts on the series here).

I reviewed this episode, "No Life Like It" earlier this year, but I've now added 100+ new screencaps to the site's Flickr. So you can follow along, here are some basic plot details:

Cold Squad, "No Life Like It" (#86)
Season 7 - Episode 1
First Aired: September 4, 2004

In the season premiere, Tahmoh's character is introduced as Constable Ray Chase, a cocky, ambitious young beat cop who's aiming to be a detective. Unfortunately for him, the detectives are having none of it, so his go-getting doesn't get him very far. Matthew Bennett (Doral on BSG), who plays the lead detective Len Harper, is especially hard on him.

Ray's winning personality (and um, cute face), however, work wonders with a key witness he brings in, forcing the detectives to let him in on the case. In the episode, we also learn that Ray apparently went to law school for three years.

Cold Squad, "No Life Like It" (7x01) review & screencaps

Tahmoh joined the critically acclaimed Canadian crime show, Cold Squad, in its seventh and final season.

Thanks to a host of fantastic fans, I've tracked down all ten episodes. I'll be posting screencaps and (non-spoilery) descriptions of the episodes over the next few weeks.

If you'd like to see the episodes, you can find a station near you airing the series or you can email me.

Cold Squad, "No Life Like It"
(#86)

The series' director, Gary Harvey, explains the back-story of the season 7 premiere, for those who want to catch up:
"As we hadn't expected a season 7 for Cold Squad we sort of ended the previous season with Ali (Julie Stewart) walking away from the job. We wanted launch into this season being true to where we left off in season 6. We jumped ahead 6 months or so with the new Cold Squad beginning. The squad now consisted of 3 people, Pawlachuk, Harper and a new face Samantha (Sonja Bennett, no relation to Matthew Bennett (Len Harper)). And new offices as too. Ali is out in the world floating around not really knowing what to do with herself. Christine (Joely Collins) continues to feed her tidbits of info about the goings on inside the squad. Ali fights this, on the surface, but of course cannot give it up."

"Then movement in a case arrives that Ali hadn’t been able to close previously. It piques her interest but, true to her new self, has a difficult time admitting it. After much thought she ultimately ends up asking for her job back. Pawlachuk of course places some restrictions on her but we were wanting to get to a place where Ali was returning on her own terms. Her reasons for being a cop clearly defined and her resolve hardened. For the loyal viewer, the season arc seems to come to a logical conclusion by episode 98. This hardened resolve, motive and vulnerability all revealed in Ali as she takes a journey to the darkest places within herself. I put this here, because, in my mind episode 98 (the last Cold Squad episode) begins here."
"This episode also introduces Tahmoh Penikett as Ray Chase, a beat cop looking to fast track his career into detective work. Ray quickly becomes a fixture at the squad."
Here are some more screencaps:

Tahmoh in Cold Squad promo photos & TV Guide

Thanks to the official website of Sonja Bennett, Tahmoh's costar in the seventh season of Cold Squad, here are two official S7 Cold Squad promo photos and probably Tahmoh's earliest appearance in TV Guide from April 24, 2004.

Here's a screenshot of the TV Guide article [click to make it larger], but you can find a PDF version on Bennett's site.

Remember, Season 7 of Cold Squad is airing in the US in syndication every weekend in most markets. If anyone out there in the SF Bay area could record it for me, please let me know! (SF seems to be the only place airing all of S7 in order.)

First Season 7 episode of Cold Squad airs in US

The episode introduces Tahmoh as an ambitious young cop who wants to be a detective. In an amusing Battlestar connection, the head detective Matthew Bennett (the cylon Aaron Doral on BSG) isn't so keen on the idea and blows Tahmoh's character, Ray Chase, off.

Just a warning, in NYC/Boston at least the ABC affiliates are inconsistent on the timeslots they air Cold Squad in. I only got the first half of the episode as The Color Purple late night airing ran over... Anyone get the whole episode? (I also only have it on VHS at the moment, so these screenshots are retro... I'll make more/better ones when/if I get a better copy of the episode).

Here's the episode description from TV.com:

86. No Life Like It
First aired: 9/4/2004 Production Code: 86

When the sister of a murder victim from a case Ali worked on years before is found dead in an alleyway behind a strip club, Ali investigates the murder even though she's not officially on the police force.
For more on Cold Squad, see my previous posts.

For a list of stations airing the series in US, go here. (It's sold to 96 of the top 100 US markets, so hopefully somewhere near you...).

Season 7 of Cold Squad to debut in April

Tahmoh starred as Constable Ray Chase in the series' 7th and last season. ABC affiliates in the US have been airing the show--which was the inspiration for the US series Cold Case--over the past six months in late night weekend slots. They've finally reached season 7, when Tahmoh joined the cast.

In New York City, the first season 7 ep airs on April 1st. In Boston it won't be until mid-April, so check your local listings. Just in time to ease the disappearance of Galactica from our weekend watching schedules!

To read interviews with Tahmoh about his experiences on the show and see more photos from the episodes, see my previous posts.

Cold Squad does well in US syndication

According to the Vancouver Sun, the Canadian series, Cold Squad, on which the US series Cold Case is based, is doing well in its run in the US syndication market. Tahmoh joined the cast in the show's seventh season as Corporal Ray Chase.

Canadian shows reaching millions of viewers worldwide in syndication

"Cold Squad" and "Stone Undercover:" Airing together as Thunderbird Film's so-called Crime Watch package, the two shows pull in almost four million viewers a week.
Click on the "Cold Squad" tag below this post to find out more about the series and see photos of Tahmoh as Corporal Chase.

Program Partners has sold the show to the top 50 US markets as late night programming. To find when it's airing near you, you'll have to check your local affiliate's schedule. Here's Program Partner's list of affiliates. In Boston, at least, they haven't yet aired any of the 7th season, but seem to be making their way there (they're on #57, Tahmoh starts in #86--that said they're not being strictly linear in the schedule).

2004 Interview with Tahmoh

Here's an older interview with Tahmoh from The Globe and Mail during the filming of the first season of BSG.

"Rookie bares all, well almost, for Cold Squad"

He wanted to get naked but they made him wear a nude-coloured sock, says actor Tahmoh Penikett about a scene from Cold Squad

by Mary Nersessian (2 October 2004)
It was not long ago that Tahmoh Penikett remembers struggling to pay for his acting classes and wondering whether he would ever make it as an actor. “You question yourself,” he says, “We face so much rejection.”

He quotes the words of Mike Myers as aptly capturing every actor's worst nightmare, “I still believe that at any time the no-talent police will come and arrest me.”
Penikett, 29, plays Officer Ray Chase in the seventh and final season of CTV's Cold Squad. This is his first lead supporting role.

The son of former Yukon premier Tony Penikett, he has been working as an actor for three years. His luck took a turn for the better when he was giving an actor friend a ride. His friend received a call from his agent about an audition and, despite tight competition even among friends in the same industry, told Penikett about it. Three tryouts later, Penikett had the part in Cold Squad. His character is a rookie who quit law school.

He says he's grateful to have work because “everyone knows in the last couple of years work has slowed down . . . obviously as an actor, our careers are so volatile, one day you've got work, the next you don't.”

And he's not against moving to the United States. “I'm definitely open to it. If you have any aspirations, you have to be open to the possibility.”

In Toronto to promote the final season of the acclaimed series, Penikett is wearing a black buttoned-down shirt and blue jeans and smells faintly of soap, as if he just stepped out of the shower.

Asked to explain what his first name signifies, he declines. He promised his grandmother he would not reveal its meaning. “I don't like telling people. I have to know them a little bit,” he says, but he does reveal that his name has Upper Tanana origins (the Upper Tanana people live in the region of the Yukon/Alaska border).

He was born and raised in Yukon, which he calls “a magical place.”

“Northerners in general have a lot more respect for the outdoors, for wildlife, for Mother Earth, because they are such a small presence in a huge vast land,” he says.

Just two days before the interview, he lost his voice after a 13-hour, “emotionally exhausting” shoot for Battlestar Galactica, when his character learned that his lover “was not who she said she was.”

He speaks in hushed tones to preserve his voice. His delivery is rhythmic, almost as if he is reading a script and timing his punchlines.

Penikett says on his first day on the set of Cold Squad he had to perform a three-page monologue. He was terrified, but he was put at ease by the camaraderie on the set.

He recounts one scene that took several takes. His character is taking a shower when Sergeant Ali McCormick walks into the shower room.

But actress Julie Stewart promptly forgot her lines upon the sight of Penikett's bare behind.

“I am pretty much naked, bare-assed,” he remembers and laughs. “She was so red, she was more embarrassed than I was.” He was naked, but for a sock.

“They had me wearing a nude-coloured sock, I'll tell you, it's a funny looking thing. I should have been naked but they wouldn't let me do that.”

Cold Squad poll results and new Helo/Sharon poll

A new poll at right for BSG fans. What do you think will be going on with Helo and Sharon at the start of Season 3? Will they be speaking to each other? Will they just be friends? Will they be living together? Married?

Vote now! ------->

Thanks to everyone who voted in the Cold Squad poll. Most are very eager to see the show and plan to watch (53%). A few are more cautious, but curious (21%). Only 6% are completely uninterested.

I'll try to keep people updated on Cold Squad as the show's US debut nears.

Cold Squad to air in the US this fall

With the success of DaVinci's Inquest in the US, Program Partners has acquired syndication rights to Cold Squad, selling it as part of their "Crime Watch" package to US stations. Set to premiere in Fall 2006, as of this week the show has been sold to 70% of the US market.

See if it will be available in your area by looking at the press releases.

See the Cold Squad summary page (with a promotional video).

Here's a Variety article about Cold Squad and the "Crime Watch" syndicated programming.

"The Canuck-originated series are designed to air in primetime on weekends, replacing down-trending movie showcases on UPN, the WB and Fox, or in latenight on Big Three affiliates....

To give stations programming and scheduling flexibility, Program Partners will provide Crime Watch affils a choice of satellite feeds, with two different episodes of "Cold Squad" and one of "Stone Undercover" available each week."
Can't wait til the fall! New Battlestar and eventually some Cold Squad.

New poll at right. Will you watch Cold Squad?

Cold Squad to reair on CTV?

Ide_cyan from the Cold Squad LiveJournal Community has noticed that Canada's CTV has put Cold Squad back on its schedule. Tahmoh starred as Constable Ray Chase in the show's seventh season.

Episodes are currently set to air the next two Saturdays, April 8 & 15 at 10pm. Hopefully they'll start rerunning regularly in that timeslot.

It's a great opportunity to see Tahmoh in a leading role on a top Canadian TV show (remade as Cold Case in the US). More posts about Tahmoh in Cold Squad in the Career News Archive.

Any Canadian fans out there who can record the eps for less fortunate US fans?

Last of the Cold Squad "And the Fury" Caps

Ide Cyan (from the LJ Cold Squad Community) has kindly offered up yet more pics of Tahmoh from the show.

These are from the series finale, "And the Fury". The last two caps show Tahmoh catching his boss, Ali, in the shower, cleverly calling back to his introduction to the series when Ali confronts Tahmoh's character, Ray Chase, in the shower.

(See my first post about "And the Fury" for more plot details.)
